So what about the other welterweights? How would Penn fare against someone such as Thiago Alves? What if there was a welterweight fight between Penn and Alves?
I recently completed a poll which determines who people think would win between Penn and Alves. The results combined for about 70 total votes, so here are the results.
30 (43%) picked Penn
40 (57%) picked Alves
Many fight fans think that Penn has the better skills overall, but most believe that Alves is just too strong. Although I don’t think it’s a fair comparison, it seemed that many voters were focusing on the fact that Alves looked better against St. Pierre than Penn did. Perhaps people have already forgotten about how Penn looked against Diego Sanchez, a fighter who was a top welterweight. So I must disagree with the majority on this one. I think Penn is just too damn good. Penn wins this.

UFC lightweight champ BJ Penn appears to be unstoppable while facing top lightweight challengers. On the other hand, when facing Georges St. Pierre at welterweight, he does not appear to be the same fighter. Then again, no one looks good against St. Pierre nowadays.
