This Saturday, WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero will defend his belt against Antonio DeMarco (23-1-1, 17 KOs) on Showtime. It will be the 2nd defense of Valero’s title.
Valero was born on December 3, 1981 in Merida, Venezuela, and currently carries a record of 26-0 with all 26 wins coming by knockout.
In 2006, Valero set a new world record by winning his first 18 pro fights by first-round knockout (although the record was later broken by Tyrone Brunson). By the end of ’06, Valero had become WBA super featherweight champ by stopping Vicente Mosquera in the tenth round. Valero would successfully defend the title four times.
In 2009, Valero moved up to lightweight and stopped Antonio Pitalua in the second round to win the vacant WBC belt. He successfully defended his strap with a seventh-round stoppage over Hector Velazquez in December.
When Valero faces DeMarco this weekend, he will once again look to impress observers by showing off his power. Valero also looks to silence the critics who believe that he is nothing more than just another alphabet title-holder.
