FIGHTER TO WATCH: NONITO DONAIRE

02/08/2010

By Andy E. Pulaski

Nonito DonaireThis Saturday, WBA interim super flyweight champion Nonito Donaire will defend his belt against Gerson Guerrero (34-8, 26 KOs) on pay-per-view.

It will be the 1st defense of Donaire’s title.

Donaire was born on November 16, 1982 in Bohol, Philippines, and currently carries a record of 22-1 with all 14 wins coming by knockout.

As an amateur, Donaire won three national championships including the National Silver Gloves in 1998, National Junior Olympics in 1999 and the National USA Tournament in 2000.

On July 7, 2007, as a 7-1 underdog, Donaire scored a 5th-round knockout over Vic Darchinyan to win the IBF flyweight title. This victory was awarded Ring Magazine's "Knockout of the Year" and "Upset of the Year" for 2007.

Donaire defended his title successfully three times before moving up to the super flyweight division. On August 15, 2009, Donaire defeated Rafael Concepcion to become the WBA interim champion.

If Donaire defeats Guerrero this weekend, he will most likely have a rematch with Vic Darchinyan, now the current WBC and WBA super flyweight champion.
