THE NEW BLOOD; UFC VS. BOXING REVIEW

03/04/2010
By Joe Harrison

Cain Velasquez

February was a month filled with young prospects looking to make an impact in their sport.

The UFC headlined their pay-per-view events with names like Randy Couture, Mark Coleman and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Yet, when given the moment, it was the younger names such as Cain Velazquez and Ryan Bader who shined in their televised contests.

Also, boxing continues to have new names move up the ladder and closer to glory. While ESPN’s Friday Night Fights gave fans a look at Ji-Hoon Kim, Shawn Porter and Antonio Escalante, boxing on Fox Sports Net also featured up-and-comers like Victor Ortiz on a Golden Boy show and Mike Jones on a Top Rank show.

In a time when both UFC and the sport of boxing are looking to out-do each other, it is certainly important to keep the future secure with talent as well. For fight fans everywhere, the signs are looking positive.

So who did the month belong to?

Overall, even with a few quality boxing cards taking place, the two UFC pay-per-views were simply too much to top this time around.

At UFC 109, Randy Couture stopped Mark Coleman in the 2nd round, Paulo Thiago stopped Mike Swick in the 2nd round, and Matt Serra stopped Frank Trigg in the 1st round. Also, Chael Sonnen scored a unanimous decision over Nate Marquardt.

UFC 110 was even more exciting as Cain Velasquez stopped Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the 1st round. In addition, Mirko Filipovic stopped Anthony Perosh in the 3rd round and Ryan Bader stopped Keith Jardine in the 3rd round. Plus, Wanderlei Silva scored a unanimous decision over Michael Bisping.

In boxing, other than the matches on ESPN and FSN, Showtime featured lightweight champion Edwin Valero getting a 9th-round TKO over Antonio DeMarco.

Also, on the Latin Fury/Pinoy Power pay-per-view, bantamweight champ Fernando Montiel scored a 1st-round knockout over Ciso Morales and super flyweight Nonito Donaire scored a 3rd-round knockout over Manuel Vargas. Plus, bantamweight Eric Morel got the split decision over Gerry Penalosa and featherweight Bernabe Concepcion earned a unanimous decision over Mario Santiago.

On Telemundo, bantamweight William Gonzalez got the unanimous decision over Jose Vazquez.

In another pay-per-view card, super bantamweight Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. knocked out Marvin Sonsona in the 4th round. In a jr. flyweight contest, Rodel Mayol and Omar Nino fought to a draw.

In March, the UFC will continue allowing their young guns to showcase their skills. On Versus, March 21st, Junior dos Santos takes on Gabriel Gonzaga and Jon Jones faces Brandon Vera.

A week later, on pay-per-view, Georges St. Pierre defends the welterweight belt against Dan Hardy and Frank Mir faces Shane Carwin.

On March 31st, UFC Fight Night returns on Spike TV with Kenny Florian against Takanori Gomi and Roy Nelson versus Stefan Struve. In addition, the card will include Ross Pearson, Andre Winner, and Charlie Brenneman in separate fights.

While the UFC stays busy, boxing will have plenty of televised championship matches. Starting off this Saturday, there will be a jr. welterweight unification bout between Devon Alexander and Juan Urango on HBO. Meanwhile, on Showtime, Vic Darchinyan will defend his super flyweight belts against Rodrigo Guerrero.

A week later, Manny Pacquiao defends his welterweight strap against Joshua Clottey on pay-per-view. This event may very well be the biggest of the month.

On March 20th, heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko defends his throne against top American Eddie Chambers. Come to think of it, this bout will not be televised; however, it can be seen on Klitschko.com? Simply amazing.

On March 26th, ESPN2 will feature two championship bouts. Steve Cunningham and Matt Godfrey will face off for the vacant IBF cruiserweight belt. Also, super welterweight champ Cory Spinks will defend his IBF strap against Cornelius Bundrage.

Finally, March 27th will be a big night for boxing fans. On HBO, lightweights Ali Funeka and Joan Guzman finally have their rematch for the vacant IBF title. Plus, jr. welterweight Marcos Maidana defends his WBA interim belt against Victor Cayo. Meanwhile, on Showtime, the Super Six super middleweight tournament continues as Arthur Abraham and Andre Dirrell will finally meet.

Definitely check the schedule every weekend since this will be stacked with televised fights in both boxing and the UFC.
