FIGHTER TO WATCH: DAVID DIAZ

03/08/2010

By Andy E. Pulaski

David DiazThis Saturday, former WBC lightweight champion David Diaz will take on former WBC super featherweight and former WBC featherweight champion Humberto Soto (50-7-2, 32 KOs) at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The fight will be on the televised undercard of the pay-per-view headlined by Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey.

Diaz was born on June 7, 1976, in Chicago, Illinois and currently carries a record of 35-2-1 with 17 knockouts.

As an amateur, Diaz fought at junior welterweight and had a record of 78-16. He won Chicago Golden Gloves four times, National Golden Gloves three times and was also a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team.

By the end of ’96, Diaz turned pro and won his first 26 bouts. Then, Diaz lost his first bout against Kendall Holt by 8th-round TKO in February of ’05. Later that year, Diaz went down to lightweight where he quickly won the IBA belt. In August of ’06, Diaz defeated José Armando Santa Cruz in a come-from-behind effort to win the WBC interim title. On February 20, 2007, Diaz was awarded full status when actual WBC champ, Joel Casamayor, failed to defend his belt against Diaz.

As champion, Diaz defeated Erik Morales in 2007 by a razor-thin unanimous decision. Then, in 2008, Diaz lost his title to Manny Pacquiao by a ninth-round stoppage in a very one-sided contest.

After a year-long layoff, Diaz returned to the ring and defeated former IBF lightweight and former WBC super featherweight champion Jesus Chavez by a majority decision. Coincidently, Soto’s previous bout was also against Chavez, a contest that Soto won every round while earning a unanimous decision.

The bout between Diaz and Soto should be very interesting and exciting for those who will be impatiently awaiting the Pacquiao-Clottey main event.
