POVETKIN OUT, WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO-SAMUEL PETER REMATCH ON 9/11
07/23/2010
Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko's mandatory defense against Alexander Povetkin which was scheduled for September 11th in Germany is off.
Instead, Klitschko will plan to facing Samuel Peter in a rematch on the same day, it was revealed yesterday.
The fight fell apart when Povetkin failed to attend Monday's press conference in Germany. K2 Promotions, Klitschko's company, complained to the IBF about Povetkin missing the news conference. The IBF sided with Klitschko and ordered him to begin negotiating with the next available contender, Peter.
Through the last couple of years, Povetkin has been the mandatory challenger for Klitschko. The fight never materialized because of injuries and because of Povetkin taking tune-up bouts.
Moving forward, K2 Promotions and ESPN are in talks for Klitschko's fight to air live in the United States on ESPN3.com, with a replay to be seen on one of the television networks within a couple of days after the fight. Otherwise, the fight may be televised on pay-per-view.
