Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. was born on February 24, 1977, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and currently carries a record of 45-0 with 26 knockouts.
Mayweather is a five-division world champion. He was The Ring “Fighter of the year” in both 1998 and 2007. Mayweather is recognized as the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer.
At the 1996 Olympics in Athens, Mayweather won the bronze medal at featherweight. Mayweather began his pro career in October of ’96, and won his first 13 out of 15 by knockout.
In Mayweather’s 18th bout, in October of ’98, he won the WBC super featherweight belt from his win over Genaro Hernandez. After nine successful defenses, which included victims such as Angel Manfredy, Diego Corrales, and Jesus Chavez, Mayweather defeated Jose Luis Castillo for the WBC lightweight belt in April of 2002. Due to criticism of the bout being so close, and somewhat controversial, Mayweather gave Castillo a rematch and retained his belt with a one-sided decision win.
After only two more defenses, Mayweather moved up to junior welterweight, won a couple of eliminators, and then defeated Arturo Gatti to win the WBC junior welterweight belt in May of ’05.
In April of ’06, Mayweather defeated Zab Judah for the IBF welterweight title. Later that year, in November, he defeated Carlos Baldomir for the WBC welterweight belt.
In May of 2007, Mayweather would defeat Oscar De La Hoya in the biggest pay-per-view attraction ever to win the WBC super welterweight title. From there, Floyd dropped back down to welterweight.
Then, in December of ‘07, Mayweather defeated Ricky Hatton by a tenth-round knockout. It would be Mayweather’s last bout until he returned in September of ’09. When Mayweather returned, he defeated Juan Manuel Marquez.
While most were hoping to see Mayweather fight new pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather faced Shane Mosley in May of 2010 and earned the WBA welterweight belt.
After a 16-month layoff, “Money” returned to face WBC champ Victor Ortiz, and knocked him out in the fourth round in September of ‘11.
In May of ‘12, Mayweather faced WBA super welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and won by a unanimous decision.
In May of ’13, Mayweather defended his welterweight title by defeating Robert Guerrero via unanimous decision.
Last September, Mayweather defeated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to unify the WBC and WBA super welterweight belts in the second biggest pay-per-view in history with 2.2 million buys.
