Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was born on July 18, 1990, in Juanacatian, Jalisco, Mexico and currently carries a record of 44-1-1 with 31 KOs.
At the age of 15, Alvarez became a Junior Mexican National Boxing Champion.
In October of 2005, Alvarez made his pro debut, and stopped three of his first four opponents before scoring a draw in June of 2006.
Alvarez went on to score wins over names such as Jose Miguel Cotto, Carlos Baldomir, and Lovemore N’Dou.
In 2011, Alvarez scored wins over Matthew Hatton, Ryan Rhodes, Alfonso Gomez, and Kermit Cintron. With his win over Hatton, Alvarez won the vacant WBC junior middleweight title.
On May 5th, 2012, Alvarez defeated “Sugar” Shane Mosley by a one-sided unanimous decision. The fight was the co-feature to the Mayweather-Cotto pay-per-view main event.
In September of 2012, Canelo defeated Josesito Lopez by a fifth-round TKO.
On April 20th of ’13, Canelo defeated WBA “regular” titleholder Austin Trout to unify their titles.
In September of ‘13, Canelo suffered his first defeat at the hands of pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. by decision.
Canelo rebounded from the loss with an impressive tenth-round technical knockout over Alfredo Angulo last March.
In July, Canelo scored a close decision win over Erislandy Lara.
