This blog contains updates, thoughts, and predictions.
By Joe Harrison (admin@konews.net)
8/22/10 - Congrats to Tomasz Adamek as he continues to win in the heavyweight division. Hopefully he will not go after the Klitschkos any time soon. He would be quite an underdog and could risk getting very very hurt. If he needs a heavyweight title that badly, David Haye could be the key to glory. Unfortunately, he would have to drag Haye to the ring in order to make the fight happen.
It was good news to hear that there would be a four-man tournament in the bantamweight division rather than another Super Six tournament. Unfortunately, it appears that there will be a cruiserweight Super Six tournament possibly beginning as early as December. If this is going to be COMPLETELY successful, they must find to include all four world champions.
Finally, there is no way Dana White will allow Randy Couture to lose to his fight against James Toney next week. It would be very shocking if a former boxer in Toney came away with the win. Some of you may be how I could insinuate that White has any control over the outcome of a UFC match. Well, perhaps I don't have the evidence or even the confidence to make a direct accusation, but I'm certainly not alone. Just google UFC and words such as fake or fixed.
8/18/10 - Congrats to Marquez for his victory over Diaz last night. Hopefully he gives Amir Khan a battle in December. Also, was quite surprised that Jacobs was knocked out. Maybe Pirog is the real deal.
7/25/10 - Good win for Shumenov, although he's clearly not the best at 175 (such as Chad Dawson). Also, why wouldn't I be surprised if Mayweather makes a fight with Miguel Cotto. Could we be preparing for a 154-pound unification bout between Pacquiao and Mayweather for May 2011, if not later?
7/08/10 - Some good prospects fighting on television Friday night; Mike Jones on Showtime, Hank Lundy on ESPN2, and Erislandy Lara on Telefutura. As far as boxing on Saturday, I will be very surprised if Nonito Donaire and Juan Manuel Lopez do not win their bouts on Showtime.
6/03/10 - Expect to see Miguel Cotto win a title in his third weight division with a victory over Yuri Foreman on HBO this Saturday.
Also, it appears that many boxing fans were offended when I stated that "boxing is in trouble" in the recent UFC vs. Boxing Review. Friends, can we please be realistic? The sport is not what it used to be. Anyone who disagrees is either blind or in complete denial. When we all buy a pay-per-view that does not involve Floyd Mayweather Jr, or Manny Pacquiao, and when the participants in amateur boxing stops decreasing, and when local bars begin to show more boxing matches than UFC events, then we know that the sport of boxing is moving along just fine. Until then, there are obviously reasons for concern.
