WHAT IF... TIMOTHY BRADLEY VS. JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ?
By Sam Lonsdale
Although there are four jr. welterweight world champions, it seems that Timothy Bradley is the best of the bunch. With his recent win over Lamont Peterson, Bradley may have solidified his spot as the world’s best 140-pounder.
Then there is Juan Manuel Marquez, an exceptional boxer who may campaign at the 140-pound limit. Not long ago, I did a poll featuring Marquez vs. Amir Khan, and the poll extremely favored Marquez. Then I realized, wouldn’t it be better to imagine a contest between Marquez and Bradley?
If they were to face each other in the near future, who would win?
Therefore, I recently completed a poll to determine who people think would win between Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez. The results combined for about 130 total votes, so here are the results.
85 (65%) picked Bradley
46 (35%) picked Marquez
Surely, after seeing Bradley’s performance in his most recent bout, most fans believe that Bradley would be difficult for anyone, especially for Marquez if 140 pounds is too heavy for him. On the other hand, Marquez should feel no shame in losing to Mayweather at 147. Marquez has done plenty by winning titles at featherweight, super featherweight, and lightweight. It isn’t far-fetched to consider that Marquez could be the best at jr. welterweight as well. After all, he was more impressive than Manny Pacquiao at 135 by beating both Joel Casamayor and Juan Diaz. I’d bet that he could pull it off. Therefore, this time around, I disagree with the majority.
